Music can help bring you closer to being the person you most want to be. The right songs can remind us of who we really are and who we most want to become.
I’ve had several theme songs over the years. Here’s the one I listen to whenever I need an extra boost of motivation nowadays:

I like this song because I connect with it on several levels. It uses writing as a metaphor for embracing the future and all its possibilities. Since writing and empowering people like you to live on their own terms are my two deepest passions, the song really speaks to me and reminds me of what my purpose is.
How Do I Find A Theme Song?
If you like the idea of having a personal theme song, but aren’t sure what that song might be, start by figuring out what your values are.
Take a pen and paper or fire up your Evernote or whatever your preferred note-taking app is and write down the answers to a couple of questions:
1. What is most important to me?
2. What motivates me the most?
These questions are harder to answer than you might think. If you’re not sure of the answers right off the bat, don’t panic! Lots of people are in the same boat.
We don’t always know what is most important to us. We’re surrounded by messages from other people telling us what we should think or care about, and sometimes people act like you don’t have the right to disagree. In some families or cultures, there’s also an idea that your own wants or opinions aren’t important and that it’s selfish to even think about what YOU want.
So asking yourself what you value can be confusing or uncomfortable. Don’t beat yourself up for that — there’s ways around it! And definitely don’t worry that you’re being selfish for even asking the question, because you’re not.
The best way to get around any mental blocks is to free associate. If you’re stuck, try this:
- Write on the top of your page: If I allowed myself to know what was important to me, I might value…
- Set a timer for 60 seconds.
- During that 60 seconds, free-write endings to that sentence.
- Put it away for a day.
- Return the next day and reread what you’ve written. Circle the top three answers, the ones that feel the most right to you.
Now you have three things that are important to you and you can look for music that reflects those values!
How Do I Use My Theme Song?
There are a few ways you can use a theme song once you’ve chosen it.
Some people like to listen to their song first thing in the morning to help them get going. Listening to music can help put you in a good mood for whatever else you have to do that day and help you feel motivated to move in the direction you want to go in.
You can also listen to your theme song as part of a meditation routine, in the morning or otherwise.
And finally, if you’re feeling frustrated, depressed, or like you’re not getting anywhere, listening to your theme song can help change your state of mind.

There was once an episode of Ally McBeal where Ally’s therapist suggested that Ally choose a theme song to help motivate her to be her best self.
This was the lead-in to a joke where Ally chose the theme song to the show, which her therapist rejected as not good enough. But regardless of the silly punchline, the idea of choosing a theme song for your life is a real motivational tool that I find helpful to this day.
